Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella began his martial arts training in 1973 following the teachings of Grand Master Byung Min Kim, a revered instructor, mentor, and Tae Kwon Do father.

With a dedication to imparting the skills and benefits of Tae Kwon Do training, Grand Master Ciarfella has always strived to make a difference for himself, his family and his community. That’s why, in 1995, he opened the first United Martial Arts Center.

In 2001, Grand Master Ciarfella joined forces with Master Paul Melella, 6th degree Black Belt; Master Chris Berlow, 6th Degree Black Belt; and Master Joe Badini, 5th degree Black Belt, to start United Martial Arts Centers. Each of these Masters brings a special, unique ability to the group and makes UMAC what it is today.

The Masters’ vision was to help their students reach their goal of opening successful martial arts schools and, in 2005, UMAC Franchise Inc. began selling franchises.

After more than two decades of work in developing a cohesive group of professionals, the UMAC Team is made up of certified Tae Kwon Do Masters, each bringing a dedication and passion for the Martial Arts, as well as individual areas of expertise.

July 3-11,, 2008, UMAC traveled to Korea with over 120 students to be part of the 2nd Annual Taekwondo World Festival with Grand Master Byung Min Kim. Grand Master Kim has always been a selfless leader and spends every Friday training the masters of UMAC in meditation, ki energy development, tahdo (Way of Tea) and traditional Taekwondo.

Grand Master Kim made a decision that the masters were ready to be tested for the next dan rank and thought what better place to test than in Korea! So the UMAC masters had a once in a lifetime opportunity to test for 5th, 6th, and 7th degree black belt in Korea.

Master Edmund Ciarfella tested for 7th dan Black Belt and became the 1st Grand Master in UMAC history. Master Teresa Ciarfella tested for 5th dan Black Belt and is the highest ranking and only female Master in the UMAC organization. Master Paul Melella and Chris Berlow tested for 6th dan. Master Anthony Melella and Joe Badini  tested for 5th dan.

Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella is a 7th degree Black Belt and was selected in 2002 as one of the Top Martial Arts leaders in the world, along with Chuck Norris and Billy Blanks, by Martial Arts World Magazine.

In 2014, Grand Master Ciarfella and his wife Teresa accomplished one of their long-term goals and purchased a 7800 square foot church in Warwick and converted it into a state-of-the-art martial arts facility.

In 2015, UMAC opened a location in Monroe, New York with Master Jason Bender running the school.

In 2017, UMAC opened another location in Goshen, New York with Master Edmund John Ciarfella.

United Martial Arts Centers presently has 10 locations in the tri-state area.

The entire Ciarfella family including his wife, Master Teresa Ciarfella, 6th degree Black Belt; son Master Edmund John Ciarfella, 4th degree Black Belt; and daughter Danielle, 5th degree, are involved in running the Warwick, Goshen and Monroe locations.
